toddler : 20 - 22 months

Sometimes life with a toddler feels like it's life on fast forward. Throw her big brothers in the mix and time is positively flying. Not the days of course, "the years are short but the days are long," still applies, but I think less and less so.

One big change that's happened lately is with her language (oh, and she has hair now too ;) her words are flowing more quickly than I can count them. And very sweetly, in her 19th month she gave the kiddo a nickname: Ro Ro. I think it's her version of 'brother'. Now we all call him that.

dear lady,
you can speak up for yourself now, '(where) are you mama?' you ask when we're in different rooms at home. or 'I don't like it!' or 'I ate pasta lunch,' if you've been at daycare and I ask you about your day.

I can see this development in your language is a comfort to you. you seem more content and less frustrated. it's a comfort to me too.

you sleep well (knock on wood) and by that I mean through the night with the occasional cry out and one big nap after lunch. how awesome is this? maybe you are blessedly what they call a 'good sleeper'? but do I even believe there is a such thing? hmm.

more things about you: you don't like staying inside just hanging around. instead you like activities and routines. before I went back to work we would always go on morning outings straight after school drop-off or we would both get cabin fever.

and up until recently you have been very, very insistent on being picked up by me, and only me, as often as possible and particularly when I'm trying to do something like chop an onion or turn on the stove or fix your breakfast. if I didn't pick you up you would throw yourself at my feet and wail, 'cuddle! cuddle!'
fun times.

but! recently that's started to change. in the last two weeks we've learnt that if we give you tasks, 'take the cereal to the table, please?' you are happy to oblige. you like helping. I think you like to feel capable.

all in all, how would I sum your personality up at this age? I need another word that means more than delightful combined with a word that means more than persistent. persistful? ;)

but no matter what stage, phase or age you are -- you truly are a joy. we love you lady.

the toddler series:  13-15 months, 16-17 months and 18-19 months.

p.s I was completely shocked this month when I went to take these photos. Last time there was no way she would have sat still let alone take direction. This month I asked her to 'sit there', not expecting her to take any heed and she did it. I didn't know she could do that. I've underestimated her.

I honestly can't believe she's nearly two.

{the lady is wearing a vintage dress that used to be mine, you can see it hanging up on the door here in her room. do you recognise her doll? it's a my child called lulu that she got for her first birthday. did you used to have one when you were a kid too?}

  1. She is so beautiful. Truly she is a lovely child. Next thing you know she'll be at school. It seems like you just had her nestled in the sling a few days ago! The photo of the nape of her neck is my favorite. That is a special baby spot that I always loved on mine!

    1. their little necks are so sweet aren't they! yes, I know it's true, she's growing like a gorgeous little weed ;) even though I know she's getting older I must be in a bit of denial. how did I not know she could sit still and take direction? ha.

  2. Just beautiful! She is such a little doll I know everyone says it at every stage, but this really is such a lovely age...I love the toddler updates and am really kicking myself that I didn't keep up with them...but I just felt so sick in the first half of the pregnancy that anything aside from the absolute essential required too much energy!

I also wanted to comment and say that I'm totally digging your new look. LOVE! xxx

    1. no need for kicking! only gentle hugs for pregnant people. plus, look at you with the portraits! also, this is my *third* babe and only the first time I've kept this kind of record... there's always the next one (or 2) for you ;)

and, I'm glad you like the look. still a few tweaks to do but I am very happy with it, this direction suits this time in my life. yay. xx

  4. I can't believe that you can get a nearly two year old to sit for those beautiful photos. Trouble is either running or sleeping and not much in between. It's an amazing age..,,I envy your sleeping girl..we had a 10-2am wake up on Saturday night..that was fun

    1. I couldn't believe it either! but she was jumping around a lot too. I think she knows how to sit in one spot from going to daycare (I guess?!). 10-2 wake ups are minus fun :(

    2. hmm, and then some. The problem we have is if trouble spies a camera it's 'ooooohhh, i'll have that thanks', as I reflexively swing it up out of his reach and quickly shove it in the cupboard before the tantrum! (Same goes for phone, laptop, hose, waterbottle,....and so on)

  5. Such a fantastic age! Jarvis is touch older (23 months) and I love the new confidence in him. Now if only he could talk as well as your little lady...

    1. aww, bless jarvis and his new stage. the eldest didn't really talk until he was 3 but the younger two have been fairly early talkers. it's amazing what goes on in their little minds (what I have access to, that is).
