room for kids : study in pink

posted on: Monday, May 24, 2010

Riley's paintings hang above her desk. Mum, Beshka, felt that it was important for Riley to express her tastes and add her own creations.

vibe
Girly and fun. Beshka of the Etsy store Loley's & Co, negotiated with her daughter Riley (who wanted a floor to ceiling pink room) and they agreed on three pink walls and a grey accent wall.

who lives here?
Riley, 9 in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

decor
Beshka sourced the blue cow above the bookshelf from Bye Bye Birdie - a little store in Texas, the suitcases are from The Container Store, the pink Disney TV was a gift, the desk lamp is from Target and the pin-board was a hand-me-down.

furniture
The tidy desk is the Parsons Desk from west elm that the family already owned but weren't using, the stool is from Target - Beshka found it in the bathroom section as it was meant to go with a vanity - and the bookshelf unit came from the Pottery Barn Outlet.

materials
On the ceiling Beshka used Lowe's American Tradition December Starlight paint. On the walls she used Lowe's American Tradition in Utterly Pink. And to tone down all the pink, a grey accent wall in Home Depot Ralph Lauren Forde Abbey.

diy
Beshka reupholstered the stool which originally sported a cream tapestry fabric, in blue and white material from Amy Butler. She also put together the decorative pom poms from a Martha Stewart DIY kit.

best buys
The canvases for Riley's artwork were $7 USD each and the decorative blue cow and pom pom kit were $20 USD each.

baby space fave
The pink pom poms and the blue cow - they add a joyous touch to a work corner.

top tips
"If your daughter wants a pink room do not be afraid to give it to her, but have her select an additional colour. And do not worry about matching everything, even if a professional tells you your space is horrible and nothing matches! Decorate for you, not your visitors, I think you will enjoy it so much more. Search your house/garage for items you may have forgotten and give them new life and purpose again."

Next week we'll take a look at Beshka's son's room and hear more about her inspirations and family considerations for decorating.

  1. The pom poms are great aren't they? Might have to try and rustle up a few myself!
